It is very important to start having pelvic exams from when you reach a certain age and they may even be done for reasons other than regular female pelvic organ check-ups. Usually, you will feel kind of embarrassed or uncomfortable when you have your first pelvic exam. This is normally what other girls feel too so you shouldn’t be ashamed of this emotion.
Other than for check-ups, there are other reasons as to why you should have a pelvic exam. These may include:
- Severe menstrual pain
- Vaginal bleeding that lasts for more than normal
- Unusual pain in the lower stomach
There are several things you need to remember for you pelvic exam. These are:
- When making the appointment, try to schedule it when you are not having your monthly menstrual periods.
- When you arrive for your appointment, make sure to clear any doubts or questions you have with the nurse or healthcare provider.
- If you find it easier, ask if you can have a friend or your mum in there with you.
- Tell your healthcare provider about any problems or unusual pain or bleeding you had, if any.
- Talking to the healthcare provider during the examination may help to decrease the level of uneasiness and embarrassment.
Once it is over, your healthcare provider will talk to you about any problems or medications you will need. He/she will also help you make your next appointment and tell when you will get the results of the pelvic exam.
